Self-Titled A Camp Debut Now Available in the US and Canada!

September 9th, 2009

Friends residing in North America,

We’re happy to tell you that as of today, our first record, the self-titled A CAMP debut album from 2000, is at long last legitimately available here in the good old US of A and Canada. Which means you can get it on Itunes and amazon.  Heretofore contractual nonsense disallowed it’s release within US borders….whatever!  Nine years on and we’re still proud of this piece of work, it was made in more innocent times (Nina and Nathan were living just below and a block south of those big ugly towers known as the World Trade Center), and details can be found elsewhere on our site.  For those who have not heard this record we hope you enjoy it……..we’re pushing to get it released on vinyl as well, we’ll keep you posted on that one.

Cheers!!!

Love Has Left The Room Video

August 3rd, 2009

Darlings, it’s with restrained pride that we present to you our latest video, for the track LOVE HAS LEFT THE ROOM.

Shot on fabulous Super 8 on the North Fork of Long Island, NY, the film was co-directed by the lovely and brilliant Sarah Flicker and the brilliant and lovely Maximilla Lukacs. The location was an old massive lighthouse overlooking Long Island Sound, owned by our friends Jesse Peretz (Sarah’s husband and one of Nathan’s best friends; Jesse himself is an acclaimed video director).

Does this thing make sense? Do any rock videos make sense? This is a “mood piece” , and operates via dream logic….you tell us what it all means. We reckon it makes us feel something , and it looks kinda beautiful.

Some perceptive folks who obviously had their smarty pants on have already taken note that this video makes reference to the work of Maya Deren, a female avante garde filmmaker who seminal work from the ’40s certainly informed images in the LOVE HAS LEFT THE ROOM video. We salute Maya appreciate her genius (certainly we’re not the first) , and dig her sentiment that she “makes her pictures for what Hollywood spends on lipstick.”

Enjoy this bit of film, and enjoy these photos of us engaging in the making of it. Some pretty fancy clothes got sandy and wet in the course of the one-day shoot……..Jesse and Sarah’s daughter Arrow sashayed around in her princess outfit like it was all about her……Nina got perhaps too much sun…..all in all it was a blast.

Salaam!

A Camp at Allsang Pa Skansen

July 8th, 2009

Hi all,

In between routine rock and roll festivals, A CAMP played this legendary TV programme in Sweden called ALLSANG PA SKANSEN. It’s kind of impossible to describe, but what it amounts to a combination of variety show + group sing-a-long, whereupon thousands and thousands of Swedes belt out Swedish standards, led either by the host of the show or the celebrity guest of the day.

This is probably the nicest summer Sweden has seen since the mid ’90s, so the weather was fantastic….there was about 12,000 people in attendance there in Stockholm’s famous Skansen, which is sort of like a historical amusement park…… and the TV viewership is estimated at around 2 MILLION…..in a country of about 9 million people, that’s pretty insane.

All in all it was lovely. We signed a lot of teenager’s arms, most of whom no doubt were disappointed we were not the Swedish-Idol winner “Johan”, a 16 year old, well, pop idol, who was also on the show. We couldn’t help but notice that teenaged arms feel a bit……fake, almost unformed, and that if you didn’t look up at the person who owned the arm you were signing , you couldn’t identify the kid by gender or any other means.

Trippy and surreal but fun and that describes the whole day right there.

Covers Got Us Thinking…

May 29th, 2009

With all this talk of covers, we couldn’t help but notice that a few of you brave people took a shot at covering our song STRONGER THAN JESUS…..look!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n43bNo4MgxM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=214AdOA6eqc&feature=related

And we must say we’re touched and honored! This gave us an idea, how about taking a whack at one of our songs yourself? It could be STRONGER THAN JESUS, it could be any of them from Colonia. Sing it, tape it, post it, let us know you’ve done it, and the creator of the most super awesome version (in our opinion of course) will get a super awesome prize. And everybody who rocks it gets added to our youtube channel, no matter how much you suck! How’s that for a deal?

Ok friends we love you , now show us your stuff !

xoxoxo a camp

The contest will run from May 29th- June 9th. We will announce ONE winner per week from valid entries. Please remember that this is not the place for porn, or other inappropriate material. Have fun!

A Camp Set to Release Covers EP on Nettwerk

May 26th, 2009

We are very excited to announce that we are getting ready to release an EP of cover songs that we’ve been hoarding. They will be available on iTunes on June 9th, and other digital sites on June 16th.

The track listing is:

“US + THEM”: By Pink Floyd of course, one of the most beautiful songs imaginable. The only reason we thought we could approach this one at all is it just seemed to sit perfectly within our musical vocabulary and we thought Nina’s voice could perhaps add another dimension to this already brilliant piece of music.

“BOYS KEEP SWINGING”: Who doesn’t love Bowie? He’s given us so much…and again we thought it would be rocking to hear this particular track come out of a girl’s mouth, also at this point it’s the loudest thing in our live set and is a massive energy release. It’s a totally catchy song as well, and it’s like Bowie just said to hell with it and recorded things in the most train-wrecked non-commercial way he could come up with, almost guaranteeing its commercial failure back in ‘79.

“DONE IT AGAIN”: Grace Jones did this originally on her Nightclubbing album (pull up to my bumper baby!), and it’s a hot track. We were drawn initially to the bizarre very smart lyrics and also that the Swedish soprano Jenny Lind is name-checked, that HAS to be the only instance of that in pop music. The time-travel/”ZELIG” tone to the words made a lot of sense as well as that’s kind of our vibe with Colonia. And we dug the sweet cocaine, studio-in-Barbados groove. The song manages to simultaneously seem nearly asleep and yet totally insane (in the best way), full of this world-weary sadness, plus a rage deep in there somewhere…not unlike Grace herself! As it happens we were on tour recently in Europe about a day behind her, so would see fresh traces of her along our journey, it was spooky and fun. We don’t believe she really exists. This track has become a fan fave in our live show. It’s got that Bosso flav; and Nina gets to bust out her magic claves!

PS. In case you missed them, here are the links to download the Harlem Sessions mp3’s that have been featured on various sites over the past few weeks:
NY Post Popwrap blog: “Chinatown”
Filter Magazine: “My America”
Spin.com: “I Signed The Line”

PPS. Some nice people are saying some nice things about Colonia, here is a sampling of the ones that made us blush:

“Beguiling gorgeous stuff-and smartly funny too.” – Spin
“Cardigan Nina Persson roams even further away from ‘Lovefool,’ delivering china-delicate songs well-suited to her beautifully worn alto” – Rolling Stone
“…Colonia is an enthralling amalgam of wistful, dreamy and gorgeously plaintive pop with lyrics that float between the stingingly sardonic…” – Black Book
“…instant classic…” – Entertainment Weekly
“…what sticks out most is Persson’s expressive, always comforting voice…” – Stereogum.com
“Persson strikes gold with two siren calls worthy of the last, doom laden Abba albums. “Love Has Left The Room” is her “Winner Takes It All”; “I Signed The Line” her “One of Us”. At its peak Colonia is Lou Reed’s bummer supreme Berlinreinterpreted by the Nolan Sisters. What’s not to love?” – Mojo

A Camp Video Tour Diary

March 27th, 2009

Peoples!

A Camp is on tour! And lo we have begun a VIDEO DIARY, which we are updating daily! This can be found right here on acamp.net, or on our Youtube channel

See we refuse to Twitter or whatever , but we realize we have to cave to one of these new methods of showing you various microscopic details of our daily lives. We’ve discovered it’s actually kind of fun, maybe for the same reason that David Lynch reads the weather every day over the radio in Los Angeles. Perhaps eventually someone out there will detect a pattern in all of this minutiae and nonsense and get back to us with some answers. Much appreciated! Meanwhile tune in and enjoy / suffer / be bored / grow with us, your fave band, A CAMP!!!!!
